Chemical Peels

Chemical Peels

Chemical peels, also known as chemexfoliation or derma-peeling, are used to improve and smooth the appearance of the skin on the face, hands or neck by removing its damaged outer layers. They are frequently utilized to reduce age spots and the appearance of mild scarring, fine lines under the eyes and around the mouth and to treat certain types of acne. Chemical peels are performed by applying a chemical solution to the skin, which causes it to blister, peel off, and new skin to grow in its place. The new layer of skin is typically smoother and less wrinkled than the old.

The types of chemical peels differ based on the depth at which the chemical penetrates the skin and what kind of chemical solution is used. Whereas superficial chemical peels penetrate only the top layers of the skin, medium and deep peels penetrate several layers of skin and cause a second degree burn. In general, the deeper the chemical peel, the more dramatic the effects and higher the risks. The depth of the peel also dictates the length of the treatment and the amount of pain the patient is likely to experience. Risks associated with chemical peels include redness, changes in skin color, crusting/scaling, swelling, scarring, and infection. Deep chemical peels can rarely cause more severe complications during the procedure, including heart, liver, or kidney failure.

Before selecting a chemical peel as your treatment of choice, it is important to remember that results will not be immediate; it may take several weeks or months for results to become apparent. Additionally, it’s important to prepare oneself for how the skin will look immediately after the chemical peel treatment. The professionals at Island Dermatology specialize in superficial and medium chemical peel treatments and will work with you to determine if it is the most suitable skin rejuvenation method for you. We will also work to ensure that the option you select leaves you with a more youthful appearance and restores your self-confidence!
